The 2002 season got off to a reasonable start, with points in each of the first four races before a nasty crash at Mugello that left him with an open break in his leg, which had become caught up in the spokes of his wheel. Just after his return to action later in the season Sabbatani was dropped by his team and finished off the championship riding a bike lent to him by Simone Sanna. Later that year he broke his arm at home while riding a quad.
