It's rarely a choice to have to limit certain content.
If you use the invites to invite your friends to the site, they, and you, would receive plenty of XP.
There is an entire page dedicated to ways to earn XP, so I'm not going to mention them all again here. But most people find the easiest way of ranking up is saying 'thank you' when they download a video they really appreciate.
Users who contribute to the site (in any way) have always been rewarded with more features and less restrictions, this is nothing new.
And btw, gaining a dozen XP is far less effort than the effort the generous uploaders go to to actually upload this content in the first place. Over 600 users don't notice new features being restricted because they've been saying thank you for years and have ranked up already when new features are implemented.

Have you gone and hidden that on people too? It's not under the DarcyF1 drop down menu, I can't imagine why it would be under Videos or Upload menus, I couldn't find it in my own drop down menu, can't imagine why it would be in F1 Tipping.. Am I blind, stupid, or have you made it increasingly difficult to find? If so, I'm sure it was not your intention but I can't for the life of me find it. You killed it for my father, too - who still lives in Australia but doesn't have access to 7-Mate so he was unable to watch the races.

You seem to think that websites like this choose to be so restrictive and secret - please be assured that this is entirely incorrect. User accounts only came about after the first DMCA takedown notice.
If only you had been as passionate about having access to such content as you are about not having access, this wouldn't have been such a concern for you.

It great that there's such a passion to consume this stuff but your frustration is misdirected. It's a bit unfortunate really given how much effort (I imagine) has gone into setting up and maintaining this awesome site.
Don't be discouraged though, it's real easy to get XP's and "rank up" if you browse around the site and see what you can do to contribute. I ranked up to level 5 in less than a month with not too much effort.
And on top of all this DarcyF1 doesn't require/force any $ contributions which is pretty amazing in my book. So let's not bag on the way the site is operated.

Yeah, a 'bit' of rage towards the copyright laws is a significant understatement. There are so many australian sporting events that I can no longer view because apparently I am no longer worthy of watching them regardless of the fact I'm living in Germany. One thing I do have access to, is alot of soccer. I hate soccer, I'm a petrolhead through and through. Hah. I love the irony.
Ok I get it - the website is not out to get people or to give them false hopes (as what happened with me this last weekend), and you aren't in control of their copyright laws. May I ask though, by ranking up with an account here, will I get full unrestricted access to watching full V8 Supercar races? And if so, what's the difference? You are voiding the legal aspect of the copyright laws regardless - so why does it matter if a rank 1 can't watch something illegal while a higher rank (you haven't exactly given specifics) IS allowed to watch the illegal material?

Is there some small print in a contract somewhere from Telstra that allows you to show this material in a legal manner to higher ranked people on the website? I find that hard to believe unless Telstra are getting money out of it. Speaking of which, I wouldn't mind making a donation - but again, specifics. Yeah, sorry - bagging the website was never my intention. I was raging at telstra while being confused why races which were here some days/weeks ago, weren't here now.
Torrents are out of the question for me. I'll get penalised harder than rapists and murderers for downloading a torrent file. Yay Germany.

I too, was a bit disapointed over the weekend when I couldn`t find my usual V8 fix on here. I soon realised what the guys here have had to do in order to let us watch the V8`s. Presumably Channel 7 or whatever have said no more V8 downloads (and F1 races), so Darcy has had to come up with a plan to get around this. It`s not a problem to get XP, look on the `DarcyF1` menu at the top left on the screen, go on the `about` menu an then onto `earn XP`. Won`t take you more than a few clicks to earn enough XP to see what you want.
Give these guys a break, they do a fantastic job. I`m gonna be donating some money regularly because without this site I`d be stuffed.
I only wish my broadband speed was quicker as there is so much stuff I wanna download now!!

I'm in a similar boat so I sympathise with you zaoc. I'm a Kiwi living in Amsterdam at the moment and yeah, 5 channels of football which I hate and no F1 in English either. Truly sucks.
Motors TV does have the rights to the V8's and to be fair airs them in full about a week after the event but it's not available in all European countries or on certain providers. I can't wait a week to watch an event I'm afraid.
As for number of XP's/rank/access etc I don't know the calculations but I can confirm that donating a relatively small amount (say a movie ticket's worth) gives you lots of XP's, more than any other activity I've discovered.
Finally I think the general answer to your question on the visibility of some items is that the more prominent things are the more likely they are to be targets. Even the discussion of such things can be difficult for site ops because of potential moles.
Good luck, if you hang around I think it will be worth it.
NB: Since you're in Germany you could probably just get a Usenet account for everything you need. At least it would be a valuable supplement to DarcyF1.

I would just like to say, after downloading, and commenting on the V8 Utes series from Perth, I had a look and my rank had changed to level 2 with a blue star. I've now got over 30 XP and the 1 thing I'm truly passionate about is now available to me.
I'm still thinking about making that donation I was referring to, I just didn't want to be stingy or over-do it. There aren't really any guidelines about how much to donate, due to it not being a mandatory thing.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions/thoughts and a big thanks to the DarcyF1 team for making it a simple and easy process. I had fears about having to do a lot more than what I realistically did. So again, thank you!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have looked at the FAQs and such but I don't see any specific answer where someone else has had this problem.
How do I upload an avatar/display picture properly?
I have tried about 5 or 6 times now and I just noticed my XP is going up, I'm not trying to exploit that but it doesn't seem to be working. I click on the silhouette in my profile section and it asks me to find a picture to upload, I upload it, but my picture doesn't change. I made sure they were all under 1024 kb, at first I was trying to upload a large picture (roughly 6xx by 4xx I think) and it wasn't working so I tried uploading a small square image thinking maybe the image had to be pre-sized/scaled, but that doesn't seem to work either.

Not really a forum related question but here goes anyway. I have been uploading some BTCC season reviews latelty. My question is: should these be marked as full races or not? I have not done it yet since I don't feel it's a full session but a collection of highlights. However a other user that has uploaded some other season reviews did mark them as full races. So I'm a bit confused as to what is best. It might also be confusing for others looking for the reviews.

It's designed to be vague, and the XP levels change frequently (in an upwards direction) and are not advertised. This encourages users to spam certain parts of the site for the sole purpose of ranking up, which is obviously discouraged and unwelcome.
Ranking up is designed to reward users who contribute to the website, not as a simple path for 'leechers' to get access to more and more content.

I only received 1 invitation that I could send out upon registering. The email hasn't been received by my friend so I revoked it and want to try his other email address. Is there a way to send out more than the initial 1 invite we are granted at the start?

Not meaning to be a pain, but it seems the avatar thing still doesn't work, for me at least. I'm not overly fussed, but if it's a problem others might have too then it should be mentioned I guess.

As a nooby noobcake, I think one way to improve the XP system (for me at least) would be to make thumbnails of 'locked' videos visible - so that at the very least people know what they're missing out on, rather than just making them plod along earning XP when the video's they're looking for might not even be on the site.
Otherwise, love your work.

You are not a DarcyF1 contributor, so your videos still need to be moderated and approved. And as per the most recent News article, those are delayed at the moment.
The reason that the video with a higher ID number than yours was already up, is that user IS currently a DarcyF1 contributor, so their videos are indexed on the site immediately.

Hello there,
It's ok to upload videos of Full Races, when they are already here, but with a higher quality?
We have the 2013 season of WTCC, however only 3 rounds are in 1280x720 HD. The others are standart quality such as 640x360.
My question is, it is ok to upload the HD versions? Or would that be repost and futher deleted?

It depends..
Server space is limited, and costly. If the video is super popular and dozens of people are requesting higher quality, then sure. If only a few people have downloaded it, then we don't want to dedicate multiple GB to making that handful of people a little happier.
Clips on the other hand, higher quality is nearly always better.

F1 Videos are still there. You need to build up your rank. See below copied from the FAQ under the DarcyF1 Information tab.
Why has my account been removed?
Typically this has happened because you've ignored the warnings on the home page that have told you your account is nearing deletion if you don't action them.
Automatic processes remove users who have:
a) Not verified their account
b) Not gained any XP in their first month
c) Not logged in for over 3 months (averaged as 90 days)
Why are certain parts of the site restricted to users of certain ranks?
This is simply to encourage those to contribute to the website, and reward those members who do. It really does not take much effort to rank up, and those who give back a tiny bit of what they get from the site usually rank up quickly and easily.
How to Gain XP
Some quick hints on ways to gain XP to increase your rank

V8 Supercar races will become available to you when you reach a higher level. This is done by either uploading videos, donating money or just commenting on videos and the forum. Read the post above yours for basically all information on the leveling aspects.

What issues do you have navigating the site exactly? I've personally never had any issues with the site, but maybe we can help you a bit more if you explain your thoughts.
This should explain how to gain XP. From my experience, F1 tipping is a very good way to gain some points. Donating will probably be the quickest way to get acces to all videos on the site though.

@pedanticmongrel - you should be able to see everything on the site. If you are referring to the rarity of full races, as @Tja said, some of the full races were removed from the site earlier this year after a DMCA takedown notice.

Small question, I just left a video comment but used some punctuation that came out a little messed up when the comment was posted. It is possible to edit comments to tidy it up? If not, is best practice to leave as is or is it a delete and retype as a tidy version job? Cheers :)

A question about Points - just discovered the system of earning points to unlock archived videos, and I'm a bit stumped on how one goes about earning Points. How do they differ to XP? I have 125XP and Lvl3 but I'm told I have 0 points. Seems a bit vague to me on what the difference is between Points and XP?

I have 125XP and Lvl3 but I'm told I have 0 points. Seems a bit vague to me on what the difference is between Points and XP?

Basically put, any contribution to the site will earn points (as well as XP). Contributing video content, members, donations etc. For those who don't have the yearning or ability to contribute anything, there are opportunities to earn points via completing collector card sets, and other event giveaways.
Whilst it's not yet built, there will be a mechanism for regular automatic top ups for members (rank 2 or above), so that everyone has points to use at regular intervals (I'm currently playing with the idea of bringing everyone's balance up to 100 points at the start of every month).

@magerquark10 None of these activities are contributing. Uploading clips and races, inviting new members, donating are all ways to contribute to the site, and namely earn points.
There are some bonus ways that members who don't contribute can pick up some points, but they're rarer & some are still in development.

Looking at Cardspy, every video has a d.t field. clicking on this shows a message about treasure.

This is another collector card which is only available when the correct video is viewed. Each day, this treasure card is 'buried' somewhere else, in other words, it'll be attached to another video. You get five hints to help work out where the treasure is buried, after those hints, you're on your own!

If you have a card coupon then in order to use it...you should go to the cards gallery ...pick a set of your choice ...look at the cards in the set and click on a card you might like to have that you dont currently...If you have a valid coupon to "purchase" that card then there will be a link on that card that says...Trade coupon for card... click on that and you will have exchanged your coupon for that card! Different coupon values are available. So the basic coupon can be traded for C/U/R cards....Elite coupon opens up the chance to get a Megarare card for your coupon. Have fun choosing a card you really really want!
