Forum Development Updates
admin 13 yearsIn this thread I will keep a log of things that are changing - this is still a work in progress, so if you come back and find something different, broken etc - this thread should detail that.
Also a place to report bugs, errors.

Great to see forums, something I thought would be a great compliment to the site.[br][br]
Is there any way to:[br][br]
1. add auto line breaks when is inserted? Or alternatively could we have a button on the comment toolbar that inserted a 'br' code?[br][br]
2. there seems to be no way to navigate back up the forum hierarchy without using the browser's back button. This can be cumbersome if you're in deep or have posted some comments etc.[br][br]
Not really 'bugs' but ideas.[br]

Fixed! Regular break lines should be working without using the [ br ] tags now.
A basic navigation menu has been added - something to improve in the future.
Sticky threads now built in. Moderators can sticky threads so that they are listed first in a board.
'Events' also exist now. So that a thread can be set as the official thread for an event, such as a Grand Prix, enabling better site integration.
Duplicate post identification now built. Users who refresh the page (thus resubmitting form data) will now have duplicate posts blocked.
Post editing now logs a 'last change date' that will displayed.
Still to come:
LOTS of moderator functions - these will probably come last.
Page navigation. 10 posts / thread per page, use Next, Previous, First, Last and page # buttons to move.
If anything anyone wants still has not been mentioned, PLEASE comment below! Requests are just as welcome as bug reports. Can't promise I can deliver, but I can certainly try!

Bug fix: deleting last post in thread now deletes thread from board, lowers thread count for the board and reduces user's comment count.
Related feature: moderators can now delete entire threads. And comment counts for each user in the thread will be reduced by one for each post deleted.
Page numbering has been built. Threads or boards with more than 10 entries will offer users the ability to browse between pages of 10 (boards or threads).
Next up will be more moderator functions and building in the DarcyF1 logging and alerts systems.

Request:
Tags don't currently 'surround' the selected word(s) when inserted.
i.e. if I select the word "racing" in this edit box then click on the 'bold' button I get the bold tags added at the end of my post, not on either side of the word(s) I've selected.
Is it possible to adjust this so we can 'select and click'?
NB - cheers for picking up on the other comments, looking good.

I know BBCode can do that, but so far I haven't quite figured it out for my code. I specialise in one language and only know bits of others, and I think this ability falls into the "others" so I will have to spend some serious time on it. But it will probably be a post-release sort of thing as it's only a convenience thing.

Another idea I had was:
If you're at a certain level (e.g. 4+) and you create a new thread, you could set the level required to actually view that thread (e.g. one could stipulate that only members with a rank of say 3 or higher would see the thread listed). The principle being if you wanted to share or discuss something with assured contributors only you'd be able to do so.
I don't imagine I would use such a function often but I can imagine a few circumstances where it could be quite useful.

The direct link to threads now ALWAYS goes to the most recent posts unless directed otherwise, as suggested by @DngrMs and previously implemented from the threads view only.
Next up are First and Last page links, followed by a concatenation of page numbers where there are lots of them. Later on will be a breakout function for board moderators, to break out a post into a separate thread if it's majorly off topic.

Is it possible to make a "preview", so when I make a post I can preview what I have posted before actually putting it online. It would come in handy when posting pictures or videos. Then I can check if I got all the links correct and fix it before posting, instead of editing it in the thread.

Even though this is the forum dev thread, I assume you mean on videos part of the website?
If so, all categories must start of life in the Misc category, and once they grow too big for Misc, they can break out into their own category.
So, post them there first, and if that triggers an influx of either of those categories, then they may be part of the lucky few to branch out into their own categories.

I'd just like to suggest removing this message at the bottom of the forum page:
"Some boards are not accessible to you because you are either not logged in, or of high enough rank."
It seems like something that's on a need-to-know basis, and we don't need to know. If it informed us of what board topics we'd unlock with a particular rank, that'd be a different story. But as it stands, it's just a distraction that my eyes are drawn to every time I open the page.
