Forum Development Updates

In this thread I will keep a log of things that are changing - this is still a work in progress, so if you come back and find something different, broken etc - this thread should detail that.
Also a place to report bugs, errors.

Great to see forums, something I thought would be a great compliment to the site.[br][br]

Is there any way to:[br][br]

1. add auto line breaks when is inserted? Or alternatively could we have a button on the comment toolbar that inserted a 'br' code?[br][br]

2. there seems to be no way to navigate back up the forum hierarchy without using the browser's back button. This can be cumbersome if you're in deep or have posted some comments etc.[br][br]

Not really 'bugs' but ideas.[br]
admin 13 years 13 years
Fixed! Regular break lines should be working without using the [ br ] tags now.

A basic navigation menu has been added - something to improve in the future.

Sticky threads now built in. Moderators can sticky threads so that they are listed first in a board.

'Events' also exist now. So that a thread can be set as the official thread for an event, such as a Grand Prix, enabling better site integration.

Duplicate post identification now built. Users who refresh the page (thus resubmitting form data) will now have duplicate posts blocked.

Post editing now logs a 'last change date' that will displayed.

Still to come:

LOTS of moderator functions - these will probably come last.

Page navigation. 10 posts / thread per page, use Next, Previous, First, Last and page # buttons to move.

If anything anyone wants still has not been mentioned, PLEASE comment below! Requests are just as welcome as bug reports. Can't promise I can deliver, but I can certainly try!

Bug fix: deleting last post in thread now deletes thread from board, lowers thread count for the board and reduces user's comment count.
Related feature: moderators can now delete entire threads. And comment counts for each user in the thread will be reduced by one for each post deleted.

Page numbering has been built. Threads or boards with more than 10 entries will offer users the ability to browse between pages of 10 (boards or threads).

Next up will be more moderator functions and building in the DarcyF1 logging and alerts systems.

Request:

Tags don't currently 'surround' the selected word(s) when inserted.

i.e. if I select the word "racing" in this edit box then click on the 'bold' button I get the bold tags added at the end of my post, not on either side of the word(s) I've selected.

Is it possible to adjust this so we can 'select and click'?

NB - cheers for picking up on the other comments, looking good.

I know BBCode can do that, but so far I haven't quite figured it out for my code. I specialise in one language and only know bits of others, and I think this ability falls into the "others" so I will have to spend some serious time on it. But it will probably be a post-release sort of thing as it's only a convenience thing.
dngrms 13 years

Yeah, don't spend any serious time on it! I agree, it's hardly an essential. :)

Another idea I had was:

If you're at a certain level (e.g. 4+) and you create a new thread, you could set the level required to actually view that thread (e.g. one could stipulate that only members with a rank of say 3 or higher would see the thread listed). The principle being if you wanted to share or discuss something with assured contributors only you'd be able to do so.

I don't imagine I would use such a function often but I can imagine a few circumstances where it could be quite useful.
admin 13 years
At the moment, only entire boards are limited by rank. So, in time, there should be a board for exactly what you're after :)
dngrms 13 years
Cool, also something else I noticed but not forum related...

I can't seem to "subscribe" to any 2013 feeds on the main page, the pop-up only allows me to select up to 2012. Is this by design?
admin 13 years 13 years
Ah, oops! Will fix that in next release - must have hard coded the year into that script, at some point last year :P

Edit: Fixed now.
admin 13 years
The problem with boards / threads displaying too many threads / posts per page has been fixed.

The requests page has been migrated in it's entirety over the forums.
dngrms 13 years

How about a link from the main site to the forums. Something on the nav bar perhaps?
admin 13 years
Yeah, it's ready to go when the forums officially open - still more bugs to iron out before then :)
Former member 13 years
I am seeing replies with letters cut off at the end(like the forum is too narrow to display)
admin 13 years
What browser / OS are you using?
dngrms 13 years

One more idea:

A link for each topic to got directly to the last page of that topic. At the moment I only see a way to go to the first page then subsequent pages... a direct link to the last page (which is almost inevitably where I want to go) would be convenient.
admin 13 years
Good idea - and surprised I over looked it. It has been implemented on the threads page, might implement it on the forums home page too in the future.

Could you please add another section in the forum where we can discuss other forms of motorsport other than V8SC and F1? :)
I'd like to see some BTCC, DTM and GT threads when more users actually use the forums :w
Former member 13 years
Here's a completely different idea:
How about a photo section where you coud upload motorsport-related stuff?
admin 13 years
@Tja & @pghsv7 - both great ideas, I'll make both happen this weekend.
dngrms 13 years

I bet most people know it as "DTM" rather than the somewhat awkward "Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters", however accurate the latter is.

Can we vote for a name change for the sub-forum? :D
Tja 13 years
The photo section is a great idea, but could you please include an opportunity to upload pictures to the forum straight from the computer? I don't use Flickr or any similar websites, so I'm unable to add pictures to the forum I think :*(
admin 13 years
Definitely not. Hosting images has almost as greater strain on the server as hosting videos, despite the fact that videos take up 98% of the space.

There is probably a million free image hosts you can use, like www.imgur.com
admin 13 years
The direct link to threads now ALWAYS goes to the most recent posts unless directed otherwise, as suggested by @DngrMs and previously implemented from the threads view only.

Next up are First and Last page links, followed by a concatenation of page numbers where there are lots of them. Later on will be a breakout function for board moderators, to break out a post into a separate thread if it's majorly off topic.
dngrms 13 years

Keep up the good work dude.

admin 13 years
Probably a good idea not to make too many specific motorsport boards while the forum is still growing. Have merged the newest three into a 'other' board as suggested. And like you say, if one particular category gets popular enough, we'll make a new board for it.
Former member 13 years
Just a small bug:
When you enter the forum-page, in the "Latest"-field is written "By Wednesday 31st of December 1969". That just can't be right... :D
admin 13 years
It's completely correct for when there are no latest threads - maybe not ideal to have it displayed, but it's only a problem until someone makes a thread, so I'm not going to bother coding it away.
metallica101 13 years
Is it possible to make a "preview", so when I make a post I can preview what I have posted before actually putting it online. It would come in handy when posting pictures or videos. Then I can check if I got all the links correct and fix it before posting, instead of editing it in the thread.
admin 13 years
It's very possible, I'll chuck it on the list, and see if I can get to it.
Former member 13 years
Can you add a "WEC" and a "ELMS" category? I have found this year's full races (including LM24) and could upload them.
admin 13 years
Even though this is the forum dev thread, I assume you mean on videos part of the website?

If so, all categories must start of life in the Misc category, and once they grow too big for Misc, they can break out into their own category.

So, post them there first, and if that triggers an influx of either of those categories, then they may be part of the lucky few to branch out into their own categories.

Thanks

What kind of plug-in do I need to watch the livestreams? I keeps saying I do not have the appropriate plugs-ins.
admin 13 years
As per the information on the live streams page, they are not supported by DarcyF1 - they are running on other websites - I'd suggest you check them for further information.

I'd just like to suggest removing this message at the bottom of the forum page:
"Some boards are not accessible to you because you are either not logged in, or of high enough rank."

It seems like something that's on a need-to-know basis, and we don't need to know. If it informed us of what board topics we'd unlock with a particular rank, that'd be a different story. But as it stands, it's just a distraction that my eyes are drawn to every time I open the page.
admin 9 years
@Bloopy Nice feedback, thank you. I'll have a look into it and improve.
admin 9 years
@admin Made for an easy change - hope you like it, let me know if it's an improvement or you have more great ideas.
Bloopy 9 years
Definitely an improvement, looking good!
